About Daryle
Hi, I’m Daryle—a retired American expat currently figuring out life in Hua Hin, Thailand.
While I managed to escape the professional writing grind, I never actually lost my love for putting words on a page. So, consider this your official invitation to join me for my adventures—and the highly likely, inevitable misadventures—as I wander through Southeast Asia.
Fair warning: You won’t find any “Top 10 Things to Do in Podunk” lists, recipe cards, or rigid, step-by-step itineraries here. The internet is already drowning in those, and frankly, YouTube does it better. Instead, I’m focused on how these places have changed me. I want to share what happens when an American expat attempts to navigate a beautifully complex corner of the world, and what it looks like to discover a new culture as a human being (clumsy language barriers and all).
Here is a quick look at what I’ll be diving into:
- Hua Hin Exploration: What brought me here, what keeps me here, and the weekly discoveries I make while trying not to get lost in my own backyard.
- Thailand Beyond Hua Hin: This country is roughly the size of California, but infinitely more diverse. I’ll be exploring how food, history, and dialects drastically shift the moment you leave town.
- The Rest of Southeast Asia: My wanderlust doesn’t stop at the border. I’ll be sharing stories from my treks through Vietnam, Cambodia, and Malaysia.
- Deep-Dive History: Southeast Asia has thousands of years of history baked into its architecture, religion, and daily life. I promise to make local history fascinating, not like a dry high school textbook. (Sorry, Mr. Duke.)
- Food Stories (No Recipes!): You won’t get a cooking tutorial from me, but you will get the rich history behind Thailand’s iconic dishes—and an explanation of why sipping coffee in Vietnam is lightyears away from your predictable Starbucks run.
- Temples & Sacred Spaces: You can’t throw a rock here without hitting a temple. From breathtaking hilltop views to tense, sweat-inducing stare-downs with aggressive temple monkeys, I’ll show you why no two sacred spaces are ever the same.
If you enjoy stories about cultural wonder, personal growth, and the occasional expat blunder, I hope you’ll subscribe or leave a comment.
Until next time.
