So Long and Thanks for All the Fish

Hua Hin Thailand

If you are a Douglas Adams fan, you will recognize that line from his book, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. It’s the the final message left by dolphins before they abandon Earth to escape its impending destruction as room is made an intergalactic superhighway. My departure is not nearly as dramatic as all of that, but with my departure now less than two weeks away, I did want to share a few thoughts before I go.

When I first made mention of my plans around the time of our class reunion this last September, a good number of you wanted to know why I was moving to Thailand and whether or not my move was a permanent one. I don’t possess a crystal ball, so I can’t answer the second question. But I can try to explain the reasons behind my move.

As some of you know, I have been to Southeast Asia a few times and have enjoyed all my travels there – China, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Thailand. Thailand in particular has truly captured my heart. I have visited twice now, and each time have left with a growing appreciation for the country, its people, and rich culture. There is a warmth and kindness in Thailand that feels genuine and effortless. From everyday interactions to quiet moments at temples or along the sea, I’ve been struck by the sense of inner peace that many people seem to carry within themselves. Thailand offers a slower, more mindful way of living—one that values community, respect, and balance. That atmosphere resonates deeply with me.

As I look toward retirement, I want to surround myself with that calm energy and cultural richness. I also long to step away from the anger and division that increasingly define life in America. Thailand feels like a place where I can live more peacefully, focus on what truly matters, and embrace a more harmonious chapter of life. I don’t expect everyone to agree with me or even understand my reasons for leaving. But that’s it.

This blog post is the first of many I hope to write while I am in Thailand. I will be including some stories from my previous trips to Asia, sharing a little about daily life, and just letting Judy Vanek know that I’m still kicking. Thank you to everyone who has already sent me their well-wishes. It means a lot to think I may be missed — even if just a little. If you plan to visit soon — and I heartily recommend that you do — please look me up!

          My love to you all.

    Daryl,
Safe travels and enjoy settling in to your new home! It looks so beautiful and peaceful. I certainly understand your quest for peace and slower living. We’ve sought similar goals, but not brave enough (or willing to be that far from family) to seek the adventures of a new country! Instead we chose north Idaho, and try to tune out the divisiveness of other parts of the country (with varying levels of success)!😉 I look forward to your blog!

    Daryle,

I wish you the very best on this journey. It was great catching up with you at our 50th MHS Class Reunion. I hope to see you at the 55th!

    Take care.
